Pretoria lawyer accused of stealing R3.2m from his employer

A Pretoria-based candidate lawyer allegedly stole R3.2 million from his employer’s trust fund account.

The 32-year-old has been charged with fraud and theft and is due to appear in the Pretoria Specialist Commercial Crimes Court on Monday April 4, 2022.

The Hawks’ Serious Business Crimes Inquiry in Pretoria has received a fraud-related report for further investigation from Malabye Mthembu Attorneys and Partners in brooklyn.

The law firm accuses its solicitor candidate of allegedly defrauding around R3.2 million from its trust fund account.

The money was deposited into his personal bank account between November and December 2020. The 32-year-old was charged on Friday and has since resigned from the company.

The investigation team served him with a summons.

Another lawyer arrested in March

In March of this year, the Hawks nabbed another fraudulent attorney.

The excellent Vukani Mthembu, who practiced as a barrister with Vukani Attorneys, was released on bail of 5,000 rand after his arrest in mid-March.

The 37-year-old was named by his clients and submitted claims on their behalf to the Road Accident Fund, Master High Court and Estates Office.

“After receiving money, he reportedly pocketed the funds he received; and also money for litigation after a client approached him to appoint a private investigator to conduct a private investigation on his behalf.

She allegedly paid the money into the lawyer’s trust account,” police spokesman Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said.

Sekgotodi said the defendant stole the full amount of the actual loss of R981,452.54 while claims for the full value of the potential loss of R1,300,000.00 were stopped by the Fidelity Fund.
