Minnesota summer job seekers have a record 200,000 openings to choose from – WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Public pools in Minneapolis may still be empty, but parks staff are preparing them for summer with cleaning and pressure to hire more lifeguards.

The city’s golf courses also have multiple summer openings, according to Larry Umphrey, director of water sports, athletics, rinks and golf for the Minneapolis Parks Board.

“We are looking for beginners, rangers, outside personnel who deal with and work with our golfers to provide them with the best possible experience while they are on the golf course,” Umphrey said.

He says raising wages is something they have offered at all levels to be more competitive in an oversaturated labor market.

“I think lifeguards went from $14.50 to $17.50 [an hour]up to around $18 – $21 [an hour] now for our part-time lifeguards,” Umphrey said.

Currently, there are over 200,000 job openings in the state. DEED, the Department of Employment and Economic Development, says summer is usually a hot month for hiring, but all of these openings are also due to a resurgence of the pandemic.

“There has never been a better time to look for a job in Minnesota than right now,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove.

He says teen employment is at its lowest since 2001. He encourages young people to find summer jobs in fields that could one day turn professional.

“I would say manufacturing is an area that some people might not think about,” Grove said. “It’s one of the biggest sectors of Minnesota’s economy.”

Greta Vanstrum has kept her summer job at Columbia Golf Course for the past three years.

“Oh my God, you can be outside, which is just the best thing, because you don’t want to be stuck inside like a summer day,” Vanstrum said.
