Job offers pour in for some Thornton graduates – CBS Denver

THORNTON, Colorado (CBS4)– Imagine graduating from high school with several job offers. This is happening for Adams County students. Future Forward at Washington Square is an Adams School District 12 Five Star career and technical school created to prepare students for high-demand jobs.

Senior graduate Alex Hurley is preparing to begin his career as a firefighter. Leading classmates on a drill using a fire truck donated by the Thornton Fire Department, Hurley said: ‘We need more firefighters. Everyone is looking for more firefighters, so this is a great opportunity to enter the field right now.

Hurley discovered her passion early on, and two years of enrolling in Future Forward’s fire and EMT classes only boosted her hopes.

“I love firefighting. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was five, so it’s always been a dream of mine and now that it’s coming true, it’s the best thing ever. is.

Hurley has been volunteering for nine months with the fire health department, including working on the Marshall Fire overnight last December.

Future Forward’s deputy director in Washington Square, Tessa Gargano, said providing students with an authentic industry experience is the school’s priority and it’s paying off: “Kids in all of our programs are getting offers right out of high school, several job postings where they have the opportunity to really choose which company or program is best for them from here.

Hurley’s classmate, Jessica Guevara, will leave with the United States Navy in August. She is grateful for what she learned about the science of fire: “I love it! It’s amazing, although I’m the smallest in my whole class, it doesn’t stop me from doing my best and doing what I love.

Adams 12 aims to keep the courses affordable at $40 each.

“They are ready for the pitch,” added Gargano.

Future Forward is funded by Adams County voters who approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) funding in 2016.

The Future Forward campus also offers courses in construction, diesel mechanics, law enforcement and adds sports medicine among other industries.
