At a conference in Columbus, Ohio, Port Arthur City Manager Ron Burton saw just how urgent the need is for businesses looking for workers in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Burton was one of more than 5,000 attendees at the International City/County Management Association conference.

“One of the questions they asked was how many of you are still having difficulty attracting and retaining employees. Almost 100% of the hands went up,” Burton said.

Some municipalities have lost a third of their workforce since COVID and have not been able to fill these positions.

The city held a job fair earlier this year which was deemed successful in terms of the number of applicants. He didn’t immediately know how many people were hired at that event, but said the city would attend another job fair in the future.

Alysha Hill, Labor Liaison Officer for Port Arthur, said she had also noticed employers struggling to attract workers after COVID.

Employers and job seekers can meet at a fall job fair at the Bob Bowers Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 15. The event is free to the public and employers and is sponsored by Workforce Solutions and Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce.

Hill said the job fair was usually held at the Carl Parker Center, but was moved to the civic center so more people and businesses could attend.

“There will be a wide range of employers from industrial to fast food, restaurants to media and CDL,” Hill said. “We want to encourage people to come.

Several local school districts will bring juniors and seniors to the event – Port Arthur, Nederland and Port Neches-Groves, she said.

For job seekers, there is an orientation on the morning of the event to learn how to write a CV and how to behave properly during interviews.

Hill said the goal was to have 40 to 50 employers at the job fair.
